Preliminary Ecological Appraisal
Introduction
The Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (also known as an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey) is typically the first step in identifying any ecological constraints to your proposed development. Essentially, they are a method of ‘taking stock’ of the valuable ecological features present within a site.
Its purpose is to:
-
Identify any rare or protected species or habitats which could be present on site,
-
Suggest mitigation/compensatory measures which will be required by law or for planning approval,
-
Determine if further, more detailed surveys are necessary (i.e., Phase 2 surveys),
-
Recommend targeted habitat enhancement measures which will meet planning requirements and benefit local species, resulting in an overall biodiversity net gain. Aiming for a win-win situation for both ecology and developers.
